The University of Manitoba Libraries consists of eight unit libraries and six satellite information centers located on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses and at the St. Boniface and Victoria General Hospitals. The Sciences & Technology Library serves the teaching and research requirements of the Faculty of Science including the disciplines of Botany, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, Statistics, Zoology; the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences including the disciplines of Agricultural Economics, Food Sciences, Animal Science, Entomology, Plant Science, Soil Science; the Faculty of Pharmacy; and the Faculty of Engineering including the disciplines of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Civil and Geological Engineering and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The Faculties of Science, Pharmacy, Agricultural and Food Sciences and Engineering offer graduate programs leading to master's and doctoral degrees. The Sciences and Technology Library's collection totals approximately 220,000 volumes, including 1,900 serial subscriptions, monographs, government publications, atlases and microforms. The Sciences and Technology Library staff consists of the Head, 3FTE Librarians and 9.42 FTE support staff.

Reporting to the Head of the Sciences and Technology Library the incumbent is responsible for the following:

  • collection management in the areas of Zoology, Botany, Environmental Science and Interdisciplinary;
  • participating in the library collection management program and in the management of the reference collection;
  • new course/program collections evaluations and the conspectus for the above subject areas;
  • maintaining the vertical files;
  • providing reference assistance to patrons;
  • planning, preparing and presenting orientation and bibliographic instruction programs and developing guides to the literature;
  • providing instruction on the use of electronic search systems;
  • participating in the development and maintenance of the role and objectives of the unit;
  • assisting in specific projects and other related duties as assigned;
  • participating in committee appointments as assigned;
  • coordinating the production of the Sciences and Technology Library newsletter: SciTech News and other Sciences and Technology Library publications; and for
  • coordinating the library displays on an ongoing basis and for special events.
Qualifications: A degree from an ALA-accredited library program and an undergraduate degree in the life sciences is required. A graduate degree in Zoology or Botany is an asset. At least two years experience in an academic science library in the areas of reference service and collection management is essential. Demonstrated knowledge of library information services, emerging information services and their application to libraries; knowledge of and experience with the use of computers, database searching and doing research on the Internet are required. Demonstrated ability to conduct effective bibliographic instruction is essential. It is essential that the successful candidate be highly motivated and self-directed, and have a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent time management, communications and interpersonal skills are required to work successfully with patrons and staff in a variety of situations. The successful candidate should have a commitment to professional growth and is expected to participate in professional development activities.

This position will commence on March 1, 2002 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Rank and Salary: Assistant Librarian Salary commensurate with experience.

This position has a two year probationary period.
