The University of Manitoba invites applications for the position of Physical Sciences Librarian, Sciences and Technology Library, University of Manitoba.

Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head, Sciences and Technology Library, the incumbent is responsible for collection management in the areas of Chemistry and/or Physics and other subject areas as necessary; in cooperation with the Head, participates in the library collection management program including the selection, evaluation, preservation/conservation and storage or withdrawal of material; participates in the management of the reference collection in the above subject areas; is responsible for new course/program evaluations and the Conspectus for the above subject areas; provides reference assistance to library patrons in person, by phone, e-mail or virtual reference; plans, prepares and presents orientation and information literacy programs in assigned subject areas; provides instruction on the use of electronic search systems; develops guides to the literature and database handouts in assigned subject areas; participates in the development and maintenance of the role and objectives of the unit; participates on committees as assigned; assists in specific projects and other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: A Master’s degree from an ALA accredited Library School and an undergraduate degree in either chemistry or physics are essential. A graduate degree in either chemistry or physics is an asset. At least two years experience as a librarian in an academic, government or special library with an emphasis on the sciences and experience in the areas of reference service, information literacy and collection management is required. Must be highly motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team. Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills are required to work successfully with faculty, staff and students in a variety of situations. The successful candidate should have commitment to professional growth and is expected to participate in professional development activities.

About the Libraries: The University of Manitoba Libraries consists of nine unit libraries and nine satellite information centres located on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses. With collections of over 2 million volumes, an annual operating budget of over 18 million dollars and a full-time equivalent staff of approximately 200 employees, the Libraries serves a community of approximately 38,000 students, faculty and citizen borrowers. The Sciences and Technology Library serves the teaching and research requirements of the Faculty of Science including the disciplines of Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, Statistics, and Zoology; the Faculty of Environment including the disciplines of Geological Sciences and Environmental Science; the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences including the disciplines of Agricultural Economics, Food Science, Animal Science, Entomology, Plant Science and Soil Science; the Faculty of Pharmacy; and the Faculty of Engineering including the disciplines of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. The Faculties of Science, Pharmacy, Environment, Agricultural and Food Sciences and Engineering offer graduate programs leading to master’s and doctoral degrees. The Sciences and Technology Library’s collection totals approximately 220,000 volumes, including serials, monographs, government publications, atlases and microforms. The Sciences and Technology Library staff consists of the Head, 4 Librarians, 1 Library Supervisor and 11.96 (FTE) Library Assistants.

This position has a two year probationary period.

Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
