Off-Campus Librarian
Elizabeth Dafoe Library

The University of Manitoba Libraries consists of nine unit libraries and nine satellite information centres located on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses and at the St. Boniface, Victoria, Concordia, Seven Oaks and Grace General Hospitals. With collections of over 2 million volumes, an annual operation budget of over 18 million dollars and a full-time equivalent staff of approximately 200 employees, the Libraries serves a community of approximately 38,000 students, faculty and citizen borrowers. The Elizabeth Dafoe Library serves primarily the faculty, graduate and undergraduate students of the Faculties of Arts, Education, Human Ecology, Nursing, Physical Education and Recreation Studies, and Social Work. Service is also provided to other members of the university community including off-campus students, and to the general public. The Off-Campus Library Service is the primary resource of students and faculty respectively enrolled in and teaching off-campus courses in all disciplines with the exception of Medicine, Dentistry, Dental Hygiene and Medical Rehabilitation. Staff consists of 1 academic librarian and 1 part time staff. A full time Library Assistant position is pending.

Reporting to the Head of the Elizabeth Dafoe Library, the incumbent is responsible for the following:

  • the overall operation of the Off-Campus Library Services in all its aspects, including personnel management, planning and organization, and budget administration;
  • developing and maintaining an understanding of the off-campus programs and planning and implementing services in support of these programs;
  • participating in the Libraries’ policy-making decisions and development of services affecting off-campus programs and planning and implementing services in support of these programs;
  • participating in the Libraries’ policy-making decisions and development of services affecting off-campus students;
  • providing traditional and virtual library services, including reference services, orientation and bibliographic instruction, delivery of materials, and serving as a liaison between the library user and the library system;
  • developing and offering various modes of print and electronic instructional services; designing and maintaining a virtual library Web site which will include discipline-specific information resources and links to electronic resources and instructional materials;
  • surveying the needs of off-campus students with respect to library resources and services and evaluating services on an on-going basis;
  • promoting the services available to off-campus students; evaluating and selecting materials for purchase in support of the off-campus programs and managing the acquisitions funds allocated to off-campus library services;
  • visiting off-campus teaching sites in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba to evaluate the service and providing instructional support;
  • serving as the Libraries’ liaison with Continuing Education and other faculties offering off-campus programs, thus ensuring communication and collaboration between the Libraries and the program providers;
  • in cooperation with the library units on the Fort Garry Campus and off-campus providers, cultivating and maintaining working partnerships with the community served and with community resources, i.e. community colleges, schools, public libraries;
  • representing the Libraries on appropriate committees.
Qualifications: A Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library program. An undergraduate degree in a discipline served by the Off-Campus Library Service, preferably in the humanities, social sciences, nursing, or social work. Previous experience in an academic library and familiarity with reference services, bibliographic instruction, and collection development are desired. Previous experience serving off-campus library users. Knowledge of and experience with computing technology and its application to libraries. Experience with CD-ROM, online database and Internet searching is required. Must be highly motivated and self-directed, and have a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to work successfully with patrons and staff in a variety of situation. Must have ability and desire to travel to remote locations. The successful candidate should have a commitment to professional growth and is expected to participate in professional development activities.

Effective date: April 1, 2004 Rank and Salary: Assistant Librarian. Salary commensurate with experience.

This position has a two year probationary period. Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
