Qualifications:

High school completion plus diploma from a library technician's program or equivalent relevant library experience and/or training required. A University education in a related field preferred. Four years of related academic or health library experience and/or training required. Detailed knowledge of library procedures, files and bibliographic tools in areas for which the incumbent is responsible are required. Experience with microcomputers and the Libraries' online system required. Advanced skills in the current version of WordPerfect/Word required. Experience with other software programs, i.e. spreadsheets and graphic preferred. Web site maintenance desirable. Ability to provide a high level of customer service to staff, students and the general public. Demonstrated good judgement in effectively serving the needs of patrons required. Knowledge of medical terminology desired. The ability to learn and apply automated and manual procedures essential. Ability to work independently and in harmony with others required. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, essential. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in peak periods required. Physically capable of performing the duties as assigned which may include moderate to heavy lifting. Satisfactory work record including attendance and punctuality is required.

Representative Duties:

The incumbent assists in the provision of reference services to the patrons of the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library. This includes working at the reference desk, providing basic instruction and orientation to faculty and students, and ensures that all reference publications are current and available. Provides a high level of customer service to staff, students and the general public. Maintains relevant statistics and supports collection management activities. Prepares the Information Centre schedule, and the schedule for the Learning Resource Centre seminars and workshops. Provides orientation/training assistance to new librarians. Provides library tours to internal and external patrons. Produces and updates specific publications. Orders and maintains basic office supplies for Information Centre staff, assists with the preparation of promotional/instructional materials and signage and maintains, updates and organizes records and files for the reference service. Weeds and shelf reads the reference collection quarterly, makes mending and binding decisions and shelves new reference books. Assists with collection management activities. Provides library tours to internal and external patrons. Distributes library information packages to new NIL/faculty appointments. Manages newsletter listserv, replies to newsletter e-mails and receives mail for the Information Centre. Maintains the public bulletin boards. In the absence of the administrative Assistant, serves as back-up recording secretary for Librarians meetings. Updates the Libraries voice mail.

**Normal hours for this position is 17.5 hours per week; some evening and weekend shifts may be required.
