The University of Manitoba Libraries consists of nine unit libraries and eight satellite information centers located on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses. The Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library (NJMHSL), supports the teaching, research and patient care requirements of the staff and students of the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry and the Schools of Dental Hygiene and Medical Rehabilitation. It serves the Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface General Hospital and 3 others supporting the teaching, research and patient care activities of all hospital staff and students in the hospital-based educational programs. It is the primary health information resource for faculty and students located at other teaching sites both in Winnipeg and in rural Manitoba. The Library acts as a backup resource for health sciences information in the Province of Manitoba and offers a fee-based service to external users. The Library has a collection of over 185,000 volumes comprised of print, audiovisual and computer-based media, receives 1,637 current serial titles and serves a primary clientele of over 4,000 health care workers.

Reporting to the Head of the of the NJMHSL the incumbent is responsible for the following:

  • regularly teaching classes to students in the Faculty of Medicine, graduate students, clinical faculty, nurses, allied health professionals and the public;
  • coordinating the education programs of the NJMHSL;
  • assessing emerging instructional needs and developing a set of medical informatics/information literacy competencies for students in each year of their academic careers and for faculty/staff practising evidence based health care;
  • collaborating with the other health sciences librarians and faculty members to integrate a progression of information literacy/medical informatics skills into departmental curricula;
  • investigating and applying new information technology and interactive instructional programs to the education programs as appropriate;
  • participating in the provision of comprehensive reference and outreach services and in the development of programs and services to meet the strategic and operational goals of the library;
  • participating in collection development activities as required;
  • representing the Library on appropriate committees including library and campus-wide committees, task forces and project teams.
Qualifications: A degree from an ALA-accredited library program with 2 to 3 years experience in an academic library are required. Experience in a hospital library or academic health sciences library is an asset. Teaching in traditional and electronic environments, demonstrated ability to plan and implement new programs and services, demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative and integrated environment, knowledge of instructional design and evaluation, including experience in Web based applications, are required. Knowledge of and experience with computing technology, database searching, the Internet and reference services are desired. Must be highly motivated and self-directed, and have the ability to work independently as well as with a team. Demonstrated high level of creativity, motivation, initiative and responsibility. Demonstrated good oral and written communication skills are required to work successfully with faculty students and staff in a variety of situations. The successful candidate should have a commitment to professional growth and is expected to participate in professional development and relevant professional activities.

This position will commence on September 1, 2002 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This position normally has a two year probationary period.

Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
