SALARY RANGE: $63,907 to $79,038 per annum.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will possess a Masters degree in Library Science with several years of progressively responsible library management experience, or an equivalent combination of advanced education and related experience. Experience managing staff and consulting with community-based library boards would be preferred. Strong communication, leadership and negotiation skills are required to facilitate work with staff, boards, trustees and committees. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate strong organizational and policy development skills in an environment which combines traditional and new technological library methods.

DUTIES:

The Director is responsible for the establishment and development of library services under the The Public Libraries Act, the formulation of provincial policy in respect to public libraries, the administration of provincial grants to public library boards and related agencies, and the management of provincially funded public library services.

The Director manages six work units with 20 full time employees delivering support to Manitoba's 110 regional and municipal public library outlets through grant administration; consultation; educational programs; collection support; interlibrary loan; reference; cataloguing support and management of a central collection of 180,000 volumes. Staff also provide a book mail-out program for Manitobans without local library service and consultation to the general public on library issues. The Director represents Manitoba on provincial, national and intergovernmental committees, and provides leadership to implement policy and technological advances for libraries throughout the Province. The Director is responsible for incorporating emerging professional trends into policy development and practices in the provision of library services.

Limited travel is required in this position.
