Reporting to the Director, J.W. Crane Memorial Library, the summer student assistant will gain
exposure and experience working in all aspects of the library's operations including circulation,
document delivery, cataloguing, serials management, collection evaluation, development of user
guides and finding tools, and promotion of library resources and services. The student will
work as part of a team of 2 professional librarians, 1.5 library technicians and 1 library clerk.
Duration of Position: June 1 - August 27, 2004

Education
High School Diploma
Currently Enrolled in Library and Information Technology or related program
Experience
Experience working in a library setting in a full time, part time or voluntary role
Experience in a computerized office environment including use of word processing, spreadsheet
and database management software.
Training or experience in searching bibliographic data bases and the World Wide Web.
Training or experience in cataloguing and classification of library resources.
Skills
Typing speed of 40 w.p.m. with less that a 5% error rate
Good oral and written communication skills.
Ability to operate photocopy, fax, and audiovisual equipment and telephone systems.
Abilities
To provide positive, responsive service to library clients.
To take initiative and work with minimal supervision.
To manage workload and establish priorities effectively in a demanding work environment.
To work consultatively with other staff to continuously improve resources and services.
