Six (6) Month Temporary Contract

The Canadian Wheat Board is seeking a self-motivated and detail- oriented individual to assist with the technical and reference services of the Library. The Library has a unique collection of information on the grain trade and delivers timely information services through its dynamic, database-driven Library Intranet.

Duties & Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform a wide range of tasks including cataloguing and indexing, acquisitions, Intranet and collection maintenance, reference and interlibrary loan services. Duties and responsibilities will include:

1. Cataloguing books and documents, using standard cataloguing procedures and guidelines;
2. Indexing web resources, news releases, and in-house publications;
3. Classifying print materials and categorizing web resources;
4. Posting and classifying daily market news into the database;
5. Searching print and online databases to retrieve bibliographic information, articles, statistics;
6. Instructing users on how to locate information in-house and on the Web;
7. Performing Intranet maintenance tasks such as evaluating/deleting web resources, repairing web links;
8. Obtaining/Verifying bibliographic information and ordering materials for Library and departments;
9. Maintaining records for all acquisitions in the Acquisitions database;
10. Performing collection development/maintenance tasks such as monitoring new publications, weeding, shelving, preparing materials for binding/repair, maintaining correct serials holding information;
11. Providing interlibrary loan or document delivery services.

Our Requirements

The range of activities in the Library requires the incumbent to be flexible and comfortable with change and continuous improvement. Specific requirements include:

1. A Library Technician's Diploma or equivalent with preferrably two years of library experience preferred.
2. Strong knowledge of cataloguing, indexing, and classification.
3. Ability to perform duties with limited supervision.
4. Excellent computer skills, especially database and web searching skills.
5. Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
6. Good understanding of world politics and geography.
7. Knowledge of a second language other than English would be considered an asset.
