The University of Manitoba Libraries invites applications for the position of Concordia Hospital - Hospital Librarian. This position provides a unique opportunity to participate in reference, liaison, education, and collection development to meet the information needs of staff and clinicians of the Concordia Hospital.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head of the of the NJMHSL the incumbent is responsible for the following:

  • Administration: Being responsible for the overall operation of the Concordia Hospital Library (CHL) in all its aspects including recommendations on staffing, planning, computing, organization and accomplishment of the workload. Supervising the Library Assistant working in the library and to perform annual performance appraisals. Participating in the planning and development of programs and systems in support of the NJMHSL strategic and operational goals
  • Reference Service: Meeting the information needs of researchers, clinical practitioners, health care administrators, teachers and students in nursing and selected allied health programs at Concordia by providing reference services, including library instruction and training programs, assistance in the use of databases, mediated searching, and access to the Internet; and literature search services as required.
  • Collections: Preparing and recommending an annual acquisitions budget for the purchase of materials to support the operational objectives, courses and programs of CH. Performing collection evaluations when required.
  • Access Services: Ensuring the provision of Circulation and Document Delivery Services.
  • Marketing/Liaison: Promoting the Library and its services to the hospital and the WRHA staff in the Community Area of Transcona; liaising with the appropriate hospital personnel and committees; promoting the role of the librarian in the delivery of information and evidence-based or "best practice principles" in the clinical setting; and participating in the NJMHSL Section Heads Committee.
  • Accreditation: Achieving and maintaining appropriate standards to ensure that the CHL meets the requirements of the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation.
  • Representing the Library on appropriate committees at both the University of Manitoba and the Concordia General Hospital
Qualifications:

A Masters degree from an ALA-accredited library program and 2 to 3 years experience in health sciences librarianship or hospital librarianship are desired. Familiarity with reference services, bibliographic instruction and collection development are required. Demonstrated ability to plan and implement new programs and services and demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative and integrated environment are required. Knowledge of and experience with computing technology, database searching, the Internet and reference services are required. Experience with marketing is an asset. Must be dynamic, highly motivated and self-directed, and have the ability to work independently as well as with a team. Demonstrated high level of creativity, motivation, initiative and responsibility. Demonstrated good oral and written communication skills are required to work successfully with faculty, students and staff in a variety of situations. The successful candidate should engage in an active program of scholarship and research and should have a commitment to the continuing development of professional knowledge and skills.

The Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library (NJMHSL) supports the teaching, research and patient care requirements of the staff and students of the Faculties of Dentistry and Medicine and the Schools of Dental Hygiene and Medical Rehabilitation. It serves the Concordia Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface General Hospital, Grace General Hospital, Victoria General Hospital and Seven Oaks General Hospital supporting the teaching, research and patient care activities of all hospital staff and students in the hospital-based educational programs. It is the primary health information resource for faculty and students located at other teaching sites both in Winnipeg and in rural Manitoba. The Library acts as a backup resource for health sciences information in the Province of Manitoba. The Library has a collection of over 205,000 volumes comprised of print, audiovisual and computer-based media, receives over 2,064 current serial titles and serves a primary clientele of over 4,000 health care workers.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This position normally has a two-year probationary period.

Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
