Library Assistant
Summer Employment (8 weeks)

Monday to Friday: 8:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.

The AFM is a crown agency contributing to the health and well being of Manitobans by addressing the harm associated with addictions through education, prevention, rehabilitation and research. AFM has 300 employees with regional offices located in Winnipeg, Brandon and Thompson, and with satellite offices throughout the province.

AFM’s Library is open to the public and is located in Winnipeg at 1031 Portage Avenue. The library circulates the largest collection of resources on addictions and related issues in Western Canada. We currently have an opening for a summer student position Monday through Friday 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. This position is being partially funded through the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada’s Summer Career Placement Initiative, therefore applicants must meet the requirements specified by this program which include:
- Registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and returning to full time post-secondary training in the fall of 2005,
- Not to exceed 30 years of age.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of a Library Team member, the summer student will perform duties as assigned relating to collection maintenance, development and circulation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software
- Ability to work independently
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Good organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting and with members of the public
- Preference will be given to candidates with some knowledge, training or experience in the area of Libraries and Automated Library Systems

STUDENTS CAN EXPECT HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN SUCH AREAS AS:

- Using the Sydney Automated Library System
- Creating a shelf list
- Assisting in an inventory of library resources
- Providing front-line customer service
- Shelving and shelf reading
- Filling and distributing AFM publication orders
- Processing materials for circulation
- Vertical file maintenance
- Other general Library duties as assigned

It is AFM practice to conduct a criminal record check and child abuse registry check prior to finalizing employment.

Salary:$9.50 / hour
