Collections Services Librarian

The University of Manitoba Libraries consists of nine unit libraries and eight satellite information centers located on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses. With collections of over 2 million volumes, an annual operating budget of over 16 million dollars and a full-time equivalent staff of approximately 200 employees, the Libraries serves a community of approximately 38,000 students, faculty and citizen borrowers. Reporting to the Coordinator, Collections Management, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  • monitoring the Conspectus project and assisting bibliographers in completing the Conspectus in their subject areas;
  • maintaining the Conspectus database and preparing reports from this data;
  • assessing the results of course support statements and updating information for the corresponding subjects in the Conspectus database;
  • working with individual bibliographers to initiate and organize the periodic review of collection narrative policies;
  • monitoring the general approval plan and working with bibliographers on modifications to the plan;
  • compiling and analysing data and statistical information to support collections management activities and projects;
  • managing the general gift funds;
  • acting as bibliographer for Library Science and other subject areas as assigned;
  • acting as the Information Provider for the Collections Management website;
  • assisting in long term planning for Collections and participating in a variety of initiatives and projects related to collections management as requested.
Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree from an ALA accredited library program, with a minimum of 3 years of library related experience.
  • Previous experience in an academic library and familiarity with collections development and assessment, electronic resources, statistical analysis, and budget management are required.
  • Knowledge of Web languages such as HTML and XML, database management, and Access database creation are preferred.
  • Knowledge of Excel and Powerpoint are preferred.
  • Knowledge of the operation of approval plans would be an asset. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Must be energetic, innovative, service-oriented, and resourceful.

This position will commence on October 1, 2002 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Rank and Salary: Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

This position normally has a two year probationary period.

Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
